Vol. 4, 

My name is Sophie Koella. I was born in New Orleans, raised in West LA, and just recently moved to Paris. I’m half-American, half-French. I work as a model but my favorite things to do are photography and now DJing. My DJ name is Sleeep since it’s another one of my favorite things to do.

There’s a little bit of everything in there. I wanted it give a feel for who I am as a person, what I love and grew up listening to, as well as some of the stuff that inspires my DJ style.

The first Friday of “official” quarantine in France I DJ’d for an hour from our balcony (it was my girlfriend’s idea so props to her). We live on a little park in the 18th, so everyone’s apartment faces each other and the square. It was also the day after my grandfather passed away in New Orleans from Covid-19 so I was really needing something to lift my spirits after that. The positive reaction and energy from all our neighbors, 90% of whom we have never met, gave us goosebumps and tears our eyes. Everyone was dancing, little kids and grannies alike. It was the most beautiful and sincere audience I’d ever seen and it gave me hope. Since then, I’ve continued to do these DJ sets every Friday. It gives me, and hopefully everyone else, something to look forward to each week. And a necessary sense of unity I think. We are all experiencing this fucked up situation together- why not try to have some fun during the process?

This question is so hard it shouldn’t be allowed!!! It’s always evolving for me but if I had to name a few of the most consistent ones I’d say Nina Simone, Miles Davis, and Sally Mann. Then on a more personal note, I deeply admire my Dad, who is a musician, and my girlfriend Clara, who is a musician and DJ, as well.
